Set within an eco-resort nature reserve with an 18 hole golf course on a beach immediately South of Ballito the Zimbali experience offers plenty to surfer and non surfers alike. You can chose between the beachfront resort or the lodge, our preference was the Lodge accommodation up on the hill due to a lower density of people and the view overlooking the forest and lake, with the ocean in the distance. There is an excellent private hospital 1 minute away if you are travelling with infants.

The drawback is that the Ballito surf spots do require a car, though only for a 3 minute journey. You could walk about 1.5km up the beach to the southerly Ballito breaks, but on a hot day its further than it looks. The resort covers a huge area so a car is required, which would otherwise make this a non-recommendation for STG, but Zimbali was just too good to leave out. This area is very well populated with surf breaks. The locals are super friendly if you are respectful, the sharks are less so.

LOCAL BREAK

The entire coastline between Durban and Ballito is littered with great warm water surf spots, but as far as nice areas to stay in go, Ballito is by far the best area to be in. The South side of town boardering with the Zimbali resort has two great left hand points, the first of which is Salmon Point and the next one is Zimbali’s. Paddle outs at Salmon Point can be challenging if its big.

If you are a bit shark shy you can go to Warner beach, which is basically the same as Surfers Point, where the beach is netted for sharks. The down side is it is more crowded and the wave is a super fast right, so not much fun for intermediates.

There is generally swell all year round. If the wind is up you will have to get up at 5am to get the clean waves as it can start blowing at 8.30-9am. Take a shorty wetsuit in Winter, but Summer is generally fine, though for the less hardy a shorty may be preferred.
